Many Canadian drivers think the only way to tow items is to drive a pickup truck. In all fairness, that may have been the case years ago. With the advancement in vehicle capabilities, Kia has created some Kia models that offer a towing capacity suitable for various needs. Depending on the maximum towing capacity you are looking for, there are a few options in the Kia SUV lineup.
Kia Sportage
The Kia Sportage is considered a crossover and can pull a maximum of 2,000 pounds if it is properly equipped with and has trailer brakes installed, otherwise, the standard model comes with a tow package and has a towing capability of 1,653 pounds. Although this new Kia model doesn’t have massive amounts of towing power, it is still a great option if you only need to pull smaller trailers. Whether you go with the front-wheel-drive (FWD) or all-wheel-drive (AWD) option, won’t change the towing capacity.
Kia Sorento
If you have more passengers to tote around and want a higher tow rating, consider the Kia Sorento; a midsize SUV with three-row seating that can accommodate up to seven passengers. There are a few trim levels available for the new Sorento. The L and LX trim has a 2.4-litre inline 4-cylinder engine with 185 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque, which makes this Kia Sorento towing capacity 2,000 pounds. If your towing needs are slighter higher than 2,000 pounds, consider one of the V6 engine models, such as the EX, SX, or S. If these trims have Kia’s Dynamax All-Wheel-Drive, they will tow up to 5,000lbs. If you stick with the FWD version, you can get up to 3,500lbs of towing capacity.
Kia Telluride
Up next, is the mid-size SUV that has it all; the Kia Telluride. The new Telluride is an eight-passenger SUV that has either FWD or AWD, with a 3.8-litre V6 engine and boasts 291 horsepower. This model has more cargo space than the Sorento, and the Kia Telluride towing capacity is a standard 5,000lbs.
